Hatha yoga is based on the quest for physical purification and strengthening as a means of self-transformation. This is achieved through the use of asanas (postures), designed to promote mental and physical well-being while allowing the mind to focus and become free from distraction for long periods of meditation, along with pranayama (breath-control). Types of yoga like Ashtana, Bikram, Vinyasa are all examples of Hatha Yoga.
The movement in a traditional Hatha Yoga class is characterized by long, endurance-building holds and a slow, concentrated overall pace.
